Basic Chemical Properties
- Chemical Structure: Backbone composed of repeating ether linkages (-O-CH₂-CHR-) and terminated with hydroxyl groups (-OH); the number of hydroxyl groups (functionality) typically ranges from 2 to 8.
- Key Monomers:
- Main cyclic ethers: Ethylene oxide (EO), propylene oxide (PO), butylene oxide (BO)
- Initiators: Small-molecule polyols (glycerol, trimethylolpropane, pentaerythritol) or amines (ethylenediamine)
- Physical Appearance: Colorless to pale yellow viscous liquid or waxy solid (depending on molecular weight and functionality)
- Solubility: Miscible with water (high EO content grades), alcohols, esters; compatible with most organic solvents; insoluble in hydrocarbons
- Core Metrics:
- Hydroxyl value (mg KOH/g): Inverse to molecular weight, critical for PU formulation
- Functionality: Determines crosslinking density of final PU products
- Molecular weight: 200–10,000 g/mol (low MW for rigid PU, high MW for flexible PU)
